All sales final · no refunds — a free trial will let you fully evaluate the tool (one complete migration) before you buy. Provided AS-IS, without warranty; you are responsible for maintaining a current, tested FULL SYSTEM BACKUP of every source VM before you migrate. Governed by the End User License Agreement.

Proxmox VE's built-in import wizard gets your disks across — and then leaves the hard part to you: Windows guests that won't boot without a manual VirtIO driver dance on every single VM. KingWerx™ V2V Migrator for Proxmox VE connects to your vCenter or a standalone ESXi host, inventories the VMs, and rebuilds them on Proxmox VE ready to boot — right storage controller, right firmware, disks in the right order, network carried over. Your source VM is copied, not moved — it is never deleted or overwritten.

WHAT IT DOES

VMWARE → PROXMOX VE, END TO END

Point it at vCenter or a standalone ESXi host, pick the VMs, and it copies, converts, and re-creates them on your Proxmox VE node or cluster — one machine or a whole batch.

WINDOWS ACTUALLY BOOTS

The #1 import-wizard complaint, solved: automatic boot-prep arms the right storage driver before first boot — no STOP 0x7B, no mounting a VirtIO ISO and swapping buses by hand on every VM.

NOTHING TO INSTALL — NO BROADCOM, NO SDK

No Broadcom account, no VMware VDDK, no PowerCLI. It talks to VMware through the bundled open-source govc client (Apache-2.0), and nothing gets installed on the Proxmox host.

CONTROLLER MATCHED TO THE GUEST

Modern Windows lands on SATA (inbox driver), legacy guests get IDE, Linux gets VirtIO-SCSI — and BIOS or UEFI firmware (SeaBIOS / OVMF, with the EFI disk allocated) follows the source automatically.

EVERY DISK — IN THE RIGHT ORDER

Migrates all attached disks, and finds the disk Windows actually lives on by content — a server whose OS sits on "Hard disk 3" still boots, instead of starting into an empty volume.

STATIC IPs AND MACs COME ALONG

Source MAC addresses are preserved on the new VM, and fixed IP configuration carries across to the right adapters — matched by MAC, not adapter name, so nothing comes up on the wrong network.

CLUSTER & STANDALONE AWARE

Targeting a cluster? Send each VM to a specific node or spread the batch by free RAM, onto shared storage. Standalone node? Pick the storage per VM. Free space is shown against what your batch needs before you commit.

RIGHT DISK FORMAT, AUTOMATICALLY

File storage (NFS, directory) gets qcow2; block storage (LVM-thin, ZFS) gets raw. The tool reads what each Proxmox storage actually is and converts accordingly — no format dropdown to get wrong.

PASSWORD-ONLY MIGRATION

Connect with the root password and go — the disk upload uses the same password, no SSH key generation or copying required. Prefer keys? Key auth is fully supported too.

SOURCE QUARANTINE ON CUTOVER

Automatically quarantines the source VM after a successful migration — disconnects its network and disables autostart so you never end up running two of the same machine at once (duplicate IP / AD). On by default, fully reversible.

GUARDRAILS BUILT IN

It refuses to migrate the vCenter appliance it is connected through (connect to the ESXi host directly for that), checks a VM fits the target before starting, and a failed migration rolls back cleanly — VM and disks removed, nothing half-built left behind.

VS. THE BUILT-IN IMPORT WIZARD

Proxmox VE's import wizard is free and gets your disks across. The work it leaves behind is the reason this tool exists.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Runs on a Windows PC or server (elevated) with network access to both sides — nothing is installed on the Proxmox host
  • VMware source (vCenter or ESXi) reachable, with credentials
  • Proxmox VE target reachable on the API port (8006) and SSH (22) — root password or an SSH key
  • Free scratch space on the Windows machine for disk conversion

SUPPORTED

  • Source: VMware vSphere / ESXi 6.5–8.x — vCenter or a standalone host
  • Target: Proxmox VE 9.x — clusters (shared storage) and standalone nodes
  • Windows guests: Server 2003 → 2025 — legacy guests get IDE and an emulated Intel NIC that works out of the box
  • Linux guests boot on VirtIO-SCSI — no driver work needed
  • Both BIOS (SeaBIOS) and UEFI (OVMF) guests, single- and multi-disk — validated in our lab up to a 17-disk appliance

HOW IT HANDLES THE SOURCE

  • Reads the source and copies — it never deletes or overwrites your VMware VM
  • Source is automatically quarantined after migration (reversible, on by default) — nothing is destroyed at cutover
  • Live progress for every disk, and a failed run rolls back the target cleanly
  • EULA shown on first launch

OPEN-SOURCE COMPONENTS

  • Bundles qemu-img (QEMU, GPL v2) for disk conversion, govc (govmomi, Apache-2.0) for VMware access, and OpenSSH / PuTTY clients (BSD / MIT) for the disk upload
  • The application invokes these as separate processes (arm's length); the KingWerx application itself is proprietary
  • Complete corresponding source for the bundled qemu build: kingwerx.com/oss/qemu/
  • Written offer (GPL v2 §3): full source available for 3 years on request — see kingwerx.com/oss/qemu/ or [email protected]
